Why do people hide their license plate?

With the exception of Montana plates, this meme is really accurate: only people with street parked shitboxes feel compelled to hide their plate with the trademark hover finger.

It’s Friday, and I’m too checked out to do any research, but I bet there is a direct correlation of people who block out their plate for “protection” and anti-vaxxers.

well you see

my shitboxes don’t have locks

so if you find it, you might get your buddy at the bmv to pull my registry info illegally so you can steal my $200 pile of shit

Well, time for you hand over your official Oppo card  after referring to a stock CRX as a shitbox.

There are reasons why we have our license plate numbers bolted to the bumper for the world to see and not your social security number.

I think shitbox is as much about the condition as the performance. And to me, I’m perfectly happy calling the above a shitbox. Contrast with penalty box, which clearly doesn’t apply.

I don’t bother with mine but if I’m “carspotting” someone else’s neat vehicle I’ll blur theirs  about half the time. Not for any real reason except that other people are sometimes pickier than me.

Well one disturbing thing is that all numbers in an image are read by Google and remembered. I can type my Mercedes or Z plate in Google and pictures of the cars come up because I posted them here etc... so that is really fucked up!

For someone with no nostalgia goggles on, it kinda is.

Penalty box = small, uncomfortable, and gutless. I'd say the CRX qualifies. Sure, it handles great, but that's about it.

Rich people want to be noticed (and they can afford lawyers or whatever tickets they rack up) and most people prefer not to be noticed or tracked . It’s scary that I was able to find pictures of my Miata on Google and on Facebook just by typing in the license plate. You stand a decent chance of finding that person who just cut you off or gave you roadrage on social media.

I’ve actually deleted my Oppo posts and Facebook photos that contain my license plate s . It’s a bit surreal instantly seeing pics of my vehicles as the first hits.

I’ve always discreetly edited mine out for some reason - don’t want a stalker I guess.  Then I find out the fintail shows up on google images via searching for the plate number.

This isn’t ‘Nam, we  have rules here, and one of them is that stock CRXs are fucking gold. We’ll accept people owning fat, fragile, European things, but some things are still holy.

This is honestly only a guess , maybe because plate lookup sites exist?

I always figured if I were a scumbag who wanted to use the local toll Highway for free the easiest method would be to search Craigslist for the same make/model/colour car as mine and clone the license plate (seems like a printer and a plate cover would do an adequate job).

The best part being that unpaid tolls mean you can’t renew your driver’s licence round here and good luck proving that wasn’t your car.

The thumb seems like cheap insurance.

I figure if my license plate number is valuable, and bad people want to do bad things with it, they probably already have it, or if not they can certainly get it.  I drive and park my car on public roads and most everybody I see these days have this things called cell phones that have these things called cameras.
